Frequently asked questions

What is SmartStamp?

SmartStamp is the pioneering new standard in identification and authentication for the art world that combines secure, environmentally sustainable, and easy-to-use technology. Developed over more than a decade, SmartStamp’s app uses patented AI technology that is designed to read and record artworks’ surface characteristics – offering artists, collectors, institutions, and all arts and culture stakeholders a way to securely and immutably link physical objects to their digital fingerprints on the blockchain. Using the SmartStamp app is as simple as taking a picture, making the groundbreaking security and timestamping power of blockchain technology accessible to anyone who can use a smartphone.

How does SmartStamp support the art world?

SmartStamp uses patented technology to read an object’s surface characteristics, supporting the identification and verification of works to protect all stakeholders against counterfeiting, authenticity disputes, and IP infringement. SmartStamp also allows users to build an enduring archive and catalogue of their works.

Do I need cryptocurrency to use SmartStamp?

No, access to SmartStamp can be purchased with a credit card.

How can I access SmartStamp?

Anyone can access SmartStamp’s technology by downloading the SmartStamp mobile app, which will be available in 2022. The SmartStamp API is also available for enterprise partners.

What does it cost to use SmartStamp?

SmartStamp will be available to users through an affordable subscription model to be announced in 2022. Customized pricing is available for enterprise partners.

What kind of equipment do I need to use SmartStamp?

You only need your smartphone camera to use SmartStamp. Enterprise partners can also opt to use our purpose-built industrial camera. No special lighting or other devices are needed.

How does SmartStamp work?

SmartStamp uses patented AI technology to read the microsurface of an artwork. Just by taking a photo with a smartphone, SmartStamp users can create tamper-proof digital fingerprints, which store and timestamp the artwork’s data and metadata on the blockchain. These digital fingerprints are immutable records of the artwork. Even as these surfaces change, SmartStamp’s patented AI creates a new, immutable version of the fingerprint.

Each digital fingerprint may be used to create a next-generation Certificate of Authenticity or object identify proof that can be exported, shared, and transferred to others or integrated with professional collection management systems for optimal efficiency. They can also be minted into NFTs.

SmartStamp is for anyone involved in the creation, preservation, protection, and purchase of art and collectibles, including artists, collectors, galleries, museums, art lending, logistics and storage solution companies.

Can SmartStamp link physical artworks to NFTs?

Yes. SmartStamp’s immutable certificates enable the direct linking of NFTs to physical art, opening up the possibility of secure, digital trade of physical objects.

Does the SmartStamp app store the digital fingerprints?

Once the digital fingerprint is made, SmartStamp creates a permanent Blockchain Event Log, with the data and metadata of the object’s registration and verifications. Users can access the event log – the record of each time the fingerprint is verified – through the app or independently with the correct URL link. Information on objects that have been added to SmartStamp is accessible through the app.

Does SmartStamp require a tag or physical alterations to the artwork?

No, SmartStamp is entirely contactless. Nothing is required besides a smartphone.

What is the blockchain?

The blockchain is a database of records of transactions or digital events that are stored in groups, known as blocks. Because of how data is organized on the blockchain – in blocks strung together – it creates an immutable timeline of transactions and events, also known as a timestamped event log. These blocks cannot be edited or destroyed.

Is it secure to store information about your collection on the blockchain?

Security is a SmartStamp priority, and blockchain technology is widely recognized as an extremely secure method of recording transactions and information that is impossible to alter.

How is SmartStamp environmentally sustainable?

SmartStamp’s technology processes millions of timestamps simultaneously to keep costs low and reduce energy consumption. SmartStamp only partners with Proof-of-Stake blockchains and marketplaces and offers economic incentives to our users to mint and transact on those platforms.
